Eight Sumter County Primary School superheroes participated in the Georgia Movie Academy sponsored by Chattahoochee-Flint RESA. It is a digital storytelling competition that recognizes student work in the area of video production and storytelling. This project-based learning opportunity allows students to work in teams to produce a theme-based, standards-based, three minute video on a topic of their choice, and teachers serve as coaches. This year the theme was “Connect”, and the students chose to make a movie depicting family connections. Captain Connect connected a father and son to take time and play football together, a family to put down their cell phones at lunch and spend time talking, and a busy mom with house chores to take time to read a bedtime story to her child. All three scenes are very relevant in today’s busy society, but it is very important to connect with our families and spend quality time together. The students spent a day filming off campus at a teacher’s home and McDonald’s. On the day of the awards ceremony, the superhero movie stars were sent off with fan support from classes cheering them on as a limousine awaited them outside. The students rode in style to the Georgia Southwestern State University Storm Dome where the ceremony took place. The red carpet was rolled out for students to walk in and take their seats. The day was completed with lunch treats from Chick-fil-a and a stylish ride back to Superhero Headquarters. The superhero coaches for the movie this year were Mrs. Jill Cochran, Mrs. Holli Farr, Mrs. Sheryl Rush, and Mrs. Emily Smith. The three minute movie can be viewed on the Sumter County Primary School Facebook page.
