February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. The Junior Service League of Americus and Drs. Beall & Beall provided free dental screenings for kindergarten students at Sumter County Primary School. Each student also received a dental goody bag.

Ms. Lakeia Taylor and Ms. Shyericka Thornton’s Pre-K class studied a unit on transportation. The students received their wings from their first virtual airplane ride. Ms. Ladona Taylor, Flight Attendant for Delta Airlines, came and shared fun facts about the airplane and her job. She welcomed the students onto the airplane and even served them snacks.

After a week of learning about winter, students at Sumter County Primary School in Mrs. Cynthia Bittle and Ms. Laquinitha Williams' Pre-K class ended it with a letter snowball fight. The students threw snowballs at each other, picked one up, and said the letter on it. Some students even said the letter and its sound. It was "SNOWTASTIC".

Sumter County Primary School recently hosted Math Night, and it was a fun-filled evening for the entire family! Parents and students enjoyed hands-on learning activities and games. Number walks, fishing for addition sums, snow measurements, math technology, and karate addition and subtraction were a few of their favorites. Students were also given pencils and books to take home and enjoy.

While learning about winter and winter animals, students at Sumter County Primary School in Mrs. Cynthia Bittle and Ms. Laquinitha Williams’ Pre-K class performed a science experiment during small group to learn about solids and liquids using an ice cube. They used a dropper and warm water to melt a piece of ice to retrieve the object. The students had so much fun learning about the physical change of an ice cube from solid to liquid.

Students at Sumter County Primary School recently participated in the first nine weeks Accelerated Reader celebration, Read for a Treat. Students dressed up and visited Sumter County Schools Central Office for trick-or-treating. The students then returned to school for a pizza picnic.

Pre-K students at Sumter County Primary School in Mrs. Cynthia Bittle and Ms. Laquinitha Williams’ class were scientist. The students carved the pumpkins and dug the seeds and the guts out. They also discussed how the inside of the pumpkin felt and agreed it was wet and slimy. The next day the students put on their safety glasses and did an experiment by mixing baking soda and vinegar to make a pumpkin volcano.

Students from Sumter County Primary School in Mrs. Weaver and Ms. Berryhill’s Pre-K class learned with pumpkins by measuring them, completing a float/sink pumpkin experiment, and carving a class pumpkin. Students also learned about money and discussed the shape and color. They practiced identifying the numbers on the money. Next, the class went shopping at Mrs. Weaver and Ms. Berryhill’s Pumpkin Patch. Students picked out their pumpkin and paid Ms. Berryhill. She put the money in the class cash register. Students were then able to decorate the pumpkin they purchased using markers and stickers.

Sumter County Primary School recently participated in Red Ribbon Week. The theme was “Celebrate Life. Live Drug Free.” Students learned how to say “NO” to drugs and gained awareness by dressing up to a theme each day. Sheriff Eric Bryant also made a guest appearance on the morning show and spoke to the students about the importance of not using drugs and alcohol and making good choices.
